Did you know that as many as 65 percent of dogs over age seven have arthritis? This painful condition is no more fun for dogs than it is for people. However, your pet can’t tell you if something is wrong, so it’s important to know the warning signs. Read on as a local Wichita, KS vet lists some signs of arthritis in dogs.

Limping

Limping is often one of the first signs of doggy arthritis. In the beginning, Fido may only limp for a few minutes, usually as he is just getting up from a nap. Once your furry buddy warms up a bit, the limp may go away. However, over time, the limp will become more pronounced and more persistent.

Reduced Mobility

Stiffness is also a common warning sign. Your canine companion may just not move as quickly or easily as he once did. This is again something that can happen gradually.

Trouble Getting Up/Down

You may also notice your four-legged friend having trouble lying down or getting up. Fido may have a hard time climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car, or even getting on and off beds and sofas.

Licking/Biting

Another thing you may see is your pup persistently licking or nibbling at sore spots, particularly his paws, legs, or the base of his spine. This is something dogs often do when they are in pain.

Behavioral Changes

You may also see some changes in the way your furry friend acts. Fido may become withdrawn, or he may seem a bit sad. Some dogs go the other way, and want constant cuddles. Your cute pet may also lose interest in play, and he may flinch or shy away when you touch a sore spot. Some pooches also become quite grumpy.

Tips

Arthritis cannot be cured, but there are now some wonderful treatment options that can help your pooch feel better. If you notice any of these warning signs, contact your vet right away. Once your canine friend has been diagnosed, you’ll be able to discuss treatment options. Home care is also important. Small touches, like getting Fido an orthopedic bed, controlling his weight, and getting him on the proper supplements, can all be very beneficial.
